Description
The LEGO Movie Videogame is a third-person action-adventure game based on the 2014 animated film The Lego Movie. Just like the previous LEGO games by Tt Games it offers a world where the characters are built entirely using LEGO bricks. For this title all the environments are also made out of LEGO bricks, a first for the series, and LEGO itself is also the primary source material instead of adapting a different franchise to the LEGO style. The game follows the plot of the film closely and contains fragments from the film as cut-scenes. It starts with the player controlling the wizard Vitruvius as he attempts to defend his super weapon The Kragle against Lord Business and his robot minions. He is unsuccessful but tells Lord Business about the prophecy that one day the special one, a master builder, will stand up with the piece of resistance that holds the power to disarm The Kragle. The game then moves forward more than eight years to the protagonist Emmet Brickowski, an ordinary construction worker who will accidentally find the piece of resistance.
The game retains the basic gameplay from the series where the character can be navigated through a 3D environment and fight or destroy almost anything. Navigation requires a lot of platform jumping and climbing, and there are many small environment based puzzles sometimes requiring a specific ability. It is possible and needed to switch between the provided characters (often up to eight in a single level) to have them work together and offline cooperative gameplay is also supported. Eventually almost one hundred characters can be unlocked including Gandalf, Batman, Superman, Cleopatra and Abraham Lincoln. Emmet and the female master builder Wildstyle are the most prominent characters, but many more are controlled during the levels.
Entirely new is the introduction of two character types: master builders and regular builders. As the environments now consist entirely out of LEGO bricks, builders can manipulate them. Master builders such as Wildstyle are able to reshape the environment directly through a limited number of options, while regular builders like Emmet can access construction pages to create new objects through various pieces similar to LEGO is built in the real world, often by selecting the correct pieces to progress. Constructing is often required to progress, creating ladders, buildings or even an entire train. There are also various sequences with very different gameplay, such as a section with an armed car race, a race on foot, driving different vehicles, stomping through levels as a giant robot pirate, hacking mini-games and a top-down Pac-Man-like arcade game.
