Monster Hunter: Wilds is a single-player and multiplayer action role-playing game. Set in a new frontier known as the Forbidden Lands, players assume the role of a hunter tasked with exploring vast, interconnected environments while maintaining the balance between human settlements and the large monsters that inhabit the region. The narrative follows the expansion of outposts and the growing relationship between hunters and local communities, with story missions centered around investigating the ecology of new creatures and surviving unpredictable changes in the environment.

The player enters large open zones without traditional loading screens, traversing deserts, grasslands, and canyons that dynamically shift with weather and time of day. Mounts are introduced as a core travel mechanic, allowing hunters to quickly move across regions, perform mounted attacks, and switch equipment while on the move. Monsters roam freely and behave according to their own routines, with some becoming territorial during certain weather conditions or hunting other species in large-scale encounters.

Combat remains centered on real-time melee and ranged weapon classes, including great swords, bows, lances, and dual blades, each with unique combos, charge mechanics, and defensive techniques. Hunters manage stamina for dodging and blocking, sharpen melee weapons during hunts, and use specialized items such as traps, bombs, and healing potions. The new Focus Mode provides lock-on targeting and greater precision in striking monster weak points, while elemental effects and weapon affinities further influence damage output. Dynamic weather events such as sandstorms and thunderstorms alter monster behavior and visibility, forcing players to adapt mid-mission.

Progression involves tracking monsters, collecting materials, and returning resources to craft new weapons, armor sets, and upgrades. Armor skills grant passive bonuses, with set bonuses offering specialized builds tailored to specific weapon playstyles. Gathering plants, ores, and monster parts contributes to a resource loop that fuels both personal gear and settlement improvements. Completing hunts grants Hunter Rank and Master Rank progress, which unlock higher-tier challenges and stronger monsters.

Multiplayer remains integral, with up to four hunters able to join hunts cooperatively, either by matchmaking or responding to SOS flares. Teamwork is emphasized through stagger mechanics, coordinated traps, and resource sharing. Cross-platform play allows users across different systems to join the same hunts, while scalable difficulty ensures monsters adapt their health and aggression to the number of players in the party.
